I'm an airhead. Oh wow!: Hidden Corners: Maison Kayser Mexico

It's no secret that I love pastries, if they're French, then it's even better. Haha! A few weeks ago, I was invited to the official opening of Maison Kayser (yes, the super famous bakery owned by Eric Kayser) in Mexico City. Everything was so good that I felt the need to go again and write a review about it. This particular venue is located in Reforma, one of the most important avenues in Mexico City and features a fast-food bakery section and a full-fledge French cuisine restaurant.

With loaves of bread as decoration everywhere, small round trees on the tables and wooden furniture, Maison Kayser is, as I said when I was there, "completely Instagrammable". The bakery is nothing short of amazing, I loved their chocolate chip cookies, the macaroons and, by far, the chocolate eclairs were my favorite thing. They're that good. You can head there for a quick meal or a nice coffee date, the prices are similar to those of Starbucks but the flavors are way, way, superior.

Hace un par de semanas me invitaron a la inauguración oficial de Maison Kayser (sí, esa pastelería famosa propiedad de Eric Kayser) en la Ciudad de Mexico. Todo fue tan bueno que sentí la necesidad de ir otra vez y escribir una crítica al respecto. Esta sucursal en particular está localizada en Reforma, muy cerca de la glorieta con la fuente de Diana Cazadora, y tiene una sección de pastelería/comida rápida y otra que es un restaurante de cocina francesa.

Repleto de hogazas de pan como decoración, pequeños árboles redondos en las mesas y muebles en madera, Maison Kayser es, como dije cuando estuve ahí, "súper Instagrameable". La panadería es impresionante, amé sus galletas con chispas de chocolate, los macarrones y, por mucho, los eclairs de chocolate fueron mi cosa favorita. Son así de buenos. Pueden ir ahí por una comida rápida o una buena cita de café, los precios son similares a los de Starbucks pero el sabor es muy, muy, superior.

After drooling over the bakery section, I moved to the restaurant area and got a "value menu" that included an entree, main course and dessert (for around 18 dollars, no drinks included). I thought about ordering a croque monsieur (you know, the traditional French sandwich) but I went for something else. I had a french onion soup with gruyere cheese that was incredible, really, my favorite part of the meal. It had chunks of cheese and bread floating around, it was so good.

Afterwards, I ordered a steak with béarnaise sauce, it was small but thick and it came with french fries and salad. The sauce was a bit too strong for me but it was still good; the fries were delicious. My desert was an almond nougat tart covered in caramel, really delicious as well. I think the combo included a cup of coffee but I spaced out and didn't ordered it, silly me.

Maison Kayser is a great choice for a semi-fancy meal, the place looks so nice and the food is good as well. I would definitely go back for more onion soup but what caught my heart was the bakery; eternal love for those eclairs, haha. If you're ever in town, stop by and get a nice treat (or you could also visit a different branch, there are over 80 in the world), you won't regret it.

// Tras babear en la panadería, me pasé al área de restaurante y pedí un "menú combo" que incluyó una entrada, plato principal y postre (por $260, sin bebida). Pensé ordenar un croque monsieur (ya saben, el sandwich francés tradicional) pero me decidí por algo más. Comí una sopa francesa de cebolla con queso gruyere que estaba increíble, en serio, mi parte favorita de la comida, tenía pedazos de queso y pan flotando, fue hermoso.

Después, pedí un steak con salsa béarnaise, era pequeño pero grueso y vino con papas a la francesa y ensalada. La salsa fue un poco fuerte para mí pero aún así estuvo buena: las papas deliciosas. Mi postre fue una tarta de nougat cubierta en caramelo, súper deliciosa también. Creo que el combo incluía un café pero me distraje y no lo pedí, tonto yo.

Maison Kayser es una gran opción para una comida semi-elegante, el lugar está muy bonito y la comida es bastante buena. Definitivamente volvería por más sopa de cebolla pero lo que atrapó mi corazón fue la panadería; amor eterno por esos eclairs, jaja. Si están buscando un lugar de pan en México, dense una vuelta (o vayan a una de las más de 80 en el mundo), no se arrepentirán.
